Episode 1.12 - Friends vs. lovers: Are these categories, on a continuum, or just plain chaos?

This week’s episode probably represents us best – lots of talk and quite a bit less action. Like any high quality girl foursome (e.g., Sex and the City, The Golden Girls) we spend a lot of time talking about our thoughts and feelings (albeit some more than others). The typical scene (as this one was) includes snacks from the ironically named Elite Grocer, drinking ironically named Premium beers (for tired biker legs), and a comment or two from the male roommate passing through.

This day’s topic is on the “difference” between a lover and a friend. Michael Bolton once said: “How can we be lovers if we can’t be friends?” Recently, the Twin Cities’ most awesome foursome has begun to explore just the opposite. Justine says that she just heard that, “Friends always hook up” to which she agrees and see the value in. Austin shares Justine’s view of the friend-lover continuum but is wondering if chaos is a third dimension or if that is just her. Nicole, who talks to virtually no one she has ever dated, is more comfortable with the categorical distinction of the two. For Emily, this is a no brainer. Everyone wants to either date her or be her friend so the classification is irrelevant.

To no surprise to anyone, Nicole immediately starts an informal survey asking patrons, “Do you think you can be friends and not lovers?” Emily comes along for the entertainment while Austin and Justine text on their phones to get a hold of their friends … or lovers. Nicole takes a break in data collection to sing “Ain’t No Fun (If the Homies Can’t Have None)” by Snoop Dogg because she has recently found her Karaoke niche in the early 90s rap. The cast members quickly reunite to sing and dance because regardless of whether or not you can be lovers and friends, this super awesome foursome loves their friends.

My 2 cents - you can totally be friends and not lovers! But as for FWB usually some chaos will ensue...
